Anṛta (अनृत) is a Sanskrit term whose basic meaning is “not ṛta”, that is, what is contrary to ṛta (ऋत).

Anṛta is not simply a lie. It is a structural untruth, a condition in which speech, perception, institutions, and inherited ideas become separated from ṛta, the order of reality. The crucial feature is that anṛta does not usually announce itself as false. It appears rational, orderly, useful, and even inevitable from within the system that produces it.

Psycho-History and Anṛta

Psycho-History and anṛta are inseparable in Rajiv Mudgal’s work. If Psycho-History asks how history enters the human mind and continues to shape perception, memory, identity, institutions, and action, anṛta describes the condition in which that inheritance becomes distorted and begins to reproduce itself as truth. Anṛta is therefore not merely something that happens in history. It is something that can become embedded in the consciousness through which history is subsequently experienced and reproduced.
